During my first meeting with clients, whether before or after birth, we create a postpartum plan together. A postpartum plan is analogous to a birth
plan in that it can serve as a touchpoint that expresses the wishes of
the family and ensures that there has been a comprehensive discussion
of the choices, decisions, and preparations that can be made. The
postpartum plan also assists us in developing an idea about how I may
be most useful. There are many areas in which I can support the postpartum family. I can be the companion who just listens with an open heart. I can serve as an extra pair of hands. I can cook meals, take care of an infant and older children while mom showers, observe and give feedback on newborn care and breastfeeding, share resources like books, videos, and local support groups, help organize the house, do some light tidying, help create easy chores for visitors, shop for groceries, run errands, and do a variety of other tasks. I can share evidence-based information on subjects relating to the postpartum period and help families develop the coping skills they need. I have an extensive list of specialists and organizations and when called for I can make appropriate referrals. |
